Senior High (Grades 9 -
12) Project Information
The Alaska Science & Engineering Fair
is open to all Alaskan senior high school students. There is no limit to
the number of students that a school can send to the Alaska Science &
Engineering Fair.
The Alaska Science & Engineering Fair is affiliated
with the
Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) and follows its
rules and regulations.
You will need
Adobe® Acrobat Reader
in order to print/view the PDF files listed below.
The main areas of concern for
senior high projects are as follows:
Free
Advice: DO YOUR
PAPERWORK FIRST!
According to ISEF, "The
forms should be filled out and signed before any
research takes place. (Only Forms 1C, 7, and the
abstract are done after the research.)"
If you want your project
to be eligible to win the top prizes and go on to the
International Fair, your paperwork must be in
order. No exceptions.
Is your project related
to oceans, river drainages, or climate?
You may be able to enter your project in two science
fairs at once! The COSEE Ocean Sciences Fair takes place
within the Alaska Science and Engineering Fair.

1. Scientific Review Committee
Approval Required for Some Senior High Projects
All students are required to have
the appropriate paperwork filled out and signed BEFORE
experimentation begins. Some senior high projects require
Scientific Review Committee (SRC) approval. Your teacher or
adult sponsor should
contact
us with any questions about which forms/signatures are
needed.
The following resource at the ISEF
site helps you avoid SRC problems:
2. Rules and
Guidelines for Senior High:
Senior high projects for the
Alaska Science & Engineering Fair must follow the rules of the
Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF):
The following resource helps
you understand and follow the rules:
It also helps to know what the
judges are looking for in your project:

3. Abstract Contest Form
Senior High projects are required
to have two copies of a written abstract: One goes into the
project portfolio and the other is collected at Registration for
the special category Abstract Contest.
4.
ISEF Forms for Senior High:
There are several forms
that are required for Senior High projects. The
appropriate forms for the project must be printed, completed,
and signed before registering the project at the Alaska
Science & Engineering Fair.
The following resource
provides a brief explanation of each form and
when each form should be completed:
You may download each file
individually using the links below, or get them all at once

2012 ISEF project forms (1, 1A, 1B, 1C, 2, 3, 4,
5A/5B, 6A, 6B, 7) - This is the COMPLETE
SET of forms in a format that allows completion
on the computer of those fields to be filled out by the
student researcher. If informed consent from internet
sources is needed, read this additional document:
Collecting Human Subject Research Data via the Internet
Including Sample Informed Consent.
The following three forms are
REQUIRED for all senior high projects:
The following specialized forms
MAY BE REQUIRED, depending on the project:
-
Regulated Research
Institutional/Industrial Setting Form
(1C) - This form must be completed by
the scientist supervising the student research conducted
in a regulated research institution (e.g., universities, medical centers, NIH, etc.) or industrial
setting. -
Qualified Scientist form (2) -
May be required for research involving potentially
hazardous biological agents, vertebrate animals,
controlled substances and humans. Must be signed prior to the start of student
experimentation. -
Risk Assessment form
(3) - Required for projects using hazardous materials or
devices or if a required Qualified Scientist is unable
to supervise the experimentation. -
Human Subjects form (4)
- Required for all research involving
humans. IRB (Institutional Review Board) approval
required before experimentation. Must be signed prior to the start of student
experimentation. If informed consent from internet
sources is needed, read this additional document:
Collecting Human Subject Research Data via the Internet
Including Sample Informed Consent. -
Vertebrate
Animal form (5A and 5B) -
Form 5A is required for all research involving
vertebrate animals that is conducted in a
Non-Regulated Research Site. SRC (Scientific
Review Committee) approval
required before experimentation.
Form 5B is required for all research
involving vertebrate
animals that is conducted at a Regulated Research
Institution. IACUC approval
required before experimentation. -
Potentially Hazardous Biological Agents
Risk Assessment form (6A) -
Required for all projects involving microorganisms, rDNA
and fresh tissue, blood and body fluids. SRC
(Scientific Review Committee)/IACUC/IBC approval
required before experimentation. -
Human and Vertebrate Animal Tissue form (6B) - Required
for all projects using fresh tissue, primary cell
cultures, blood, blood products and body fluids.
Form 6A also required; SRC (Scientific Review
Committee)/IACUC/IBC approval
required before experimentation. -
Continuation Projects form (7)
- Required for any projects that are a continuation in
the same field of study from a previous year(s)'
