COSEE Ocean Science Fair
COSEE Ocean Science Fair: A "Fair
within a Fair"
The Alaska COSEE (Centers for Ocean
Sciences Education Excellence) Ocean Science Fair takes place within
the Alaska Science & Engineering
Fair (ASEF). You can enter two separate science fairs at the same
time!
You are eligible to enter the COSEE
Ocean Science Fair if your project is related to oceans, river
drainages, or climate change, and it also has
a cultural component. For example, it could be about ocean
organisms, coastal communities, weather, tides, human
activities related to oceans, animal behavior related to oceans,
erosion along coastlines, water pollution and its effects on oceans,
population related to oceans ... the list goes on and on! Your
project should include a component of its cultural significance. Be
prepared to talk about your science and also about how your subject
affects people's way of life.
Ocean Sciences Judging
Ocean Science Fair projects are
judged on both their scientific content and their community and
cultural relevance. Judges include scientists and community
cultural leaders and Alaska Native elders.
How to Participate
Register as usual for ASEF. Ocean
sciences projects that are entered in the ASEF are automatically
entered in the COSEE Ocean Science Fair.
Please check the "Ocean Sciences
Project" box on your ASEF registration form. The COSEE judges
will then know to visit your project during the Fair.
You do not need to
participate in a local community COSEE Ocean Sciences
Fair in order to enter your project in the combined COSEE/ASEF
Fair; however, projects that have been entered locally are
certainly welcome to enter COSEE/ASEF, too.
Middle School
and High School Students: Please remember to do your
Intel forms! Your Middle School or Senior High project might be a
"big winner" in both the COSEE and the ASEF portions of the Fair. If
your Intel forms are in order, you will be eligible for the Intel
Main Category awards, and Senior High finalists will be eligible to
travel to the International Science and Engineering Fair. The forms
are available here and on
the page for your age category:
Senior High,
Middle School.
